  • For the 2020 school year, there are 29 public schools in Talladega County, AL, serving
    11,801 students.
  • Talladega County, AL public schools have an average math proficiency score of 40%
    (versus the Alabama public school average of 44%), and reading proficiency score of
    35% (versus the 39% statewide average). Schools in Talladega County have an average
    ranking in the bottom 50% of Alabama public schools.
  • The top ranked public schools in Talladega County, AL are Charles R Drew Middle School,
    Childersburg Middle School and Ah Watwood Elementary School. Overall school rank is
    based on a school’s combined math and reading proficiency test score ranking.
  • Minority enrollment is 44% of the student body (majority Black), which is less than the

Apply – College/University Tech Trek Counselors

Applications are being accepted for College/University counselors for Tech Trek STEM Camp at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), June 7 – 13, 2020. Counselors arrive on June 6, 2020, for a one-day orientation and training. Applicants must be 20 years old.

There will be 64 rising 8th grade girls from across the state selected to attend this 7th annual camp. Counselors stay on campus at UAH with the participants and must be available 24/7. There is a small stipend for each counselor.

Tech Trek seeks to widen horizons and expand confidence of middle school girls. The program is sponsored by AAUW of Alabama in collaboration with UAH.

2020 Girls STEAM Project – March 4, 2020

Stephanie Brooks, AAUW Talladega County Branch K-12 Co-Chair, announced the Girls STEAM Project will be conducted this year with B. B. Comer School and Fayetteville School 7th and 8th grade girls on Wednesday, March 4, 2020. The one-day event will be held at Fayetteville School. The AAUW Talladega County Branch High School Student Advisory Councils will be prepared to assist with this year’s activities.

Tech Trek STEM camp for rising 8th grade girls is coming up June 7 – 13, 2020, at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), and nominations will be due in February 2020. The program is open to girls across Alabama, but student must be nominated by their science or math teacher.

After nomination, the students and their parents complete the application and interview process. Campers will spend a week on the UAH campus immersed in fun STEM activities and learning. The seventh annual 2020 camp will accept 64 girls from across the state.

Jamie Harbin to attend B. B. Comer SAC Meeting

B. B. Comer Elementary School STEAM Teacher and Integration Coach, Jamie Harbin, will meet with the AAUW Talladega County Branch High School Student Advisory Council (SAC) in the High School Library on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 from 11:24 to 11:54 am. Ms. Harbin will assist Audrey L. Salgado, SAC Advisor, in a conversation with the SAC in setting priorities for the new year. “The goal is to empower these students and their peers to become leaders in advancing the STEAM education activities at B. B. Comer High School,” said Ms. Salgado.

Lydia Platt, Founding Leader, receives Certificate of Appreciation

May 8, 2019, Lydia Platt (Center), Fayetteville High School, Student Advisory Council (SAC), receives a Certificate of Appreciation from AAUW Talladega County Branch for her role as the SAC Founding Leader.  Presenting the award were Audrey L. Salgado (Left), Advisor, and Stephanie Brooks (Right), Sponsor.  “Lydia demonstrated outstanding leadership during the first year of the AAUW SAC at Fayetteville,” stated Amber Voss, President, AAUW Talladega County Branch.

Lydia is a rising eleventh grader in the Advanced Diploma program.  Her volunteer experience includes Vapor Ministries (Human Resources, Marketing, and Overseas Trip Preparation), Annual Shake and Bake 5K, Christ’s Closet Giveaway, and Veteran’s Day Program Speaker at Fayetteville High School.

Capstone Leadership Academy at University of Alabama, Microsoft Office Specialist (Word 2016), and WISE! Financial Literacy Certification were among her achievements/honors as well as Key Club President, FOCUS Vice President, Sportsmanship Award Varsity Women’s Basketball, Freshman Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Member of the Year, and Top Five Freshman Award at Fayetteville High School.

Since seventh grade, Lydia has pursued many activities/interests including Teen Pact/ Leadership Schools, Diamond Doll, FBLA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes Leadership Team, Daily Howl/News Team (Main Achor and Executive Producer), JV Girls’ Basketball, Student Ambassador Leadership Team, Concert Band, and AAUW Tech Trek.

Audrey L. Salgado stated, “Lydia is wise beyond her years.  She is passionate about government, the political environment and its processes and plans to pursue a career in Communication/Journalism.”
